Claire Mooney is a Melbourne/Naarm based artist who lives and creates artwork in Reservoir, close to the Darebin Creek. In her artworks she explores pattern, colour and abstraction in relation to landscape and the natural environment, using layered processes that fragment and interweave abstract and organic imagery.
Mooney is inspired by her daily walks along the local creek and the experience of being immersed in the intricate visual patterns of the landscape. The forms in her works are an abstracted interpretation of the multiplicities and textures found in the environment, where repetitions and rhythms accumulate and build in intricate details and wide expanses.
The artist uses collage as the starting point for her artworks, which allows her to break up geometric patterns, fragmenting their forms and transforming them into something more akin to the complexity and richness of the natural world.
